Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust
Trafford General Hospital is part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, which operates 10 hospitals throughout Greater Manchester. Formed in 2017, it is the largest NHS trust in the United Kingdom, with an income of £1.6bn and 21,945 staff.
The Challenge
Due to the design of the building and materials used during construction (concrete, steel and Low-E glass), many hospitals suffer from poor mobile signal.
For the Trafford General Switchboard & Telecoms department, this was particularly problematic, leading to:
• Poor mobile phone signal in the Switchboard & Telecoms department, including office space and Telecoms frame room.
• Missing important calls for the Telecoms and Switchboard management team.
This would result in key members of the telecoms team having to locate themselves outside in order to make and receive mobile calls, during their daily duties and during callouts.
“This has been of great benefit to the team, who no longer have to stand outside in order to make calls. This makes callouts much more straightforward and quicker to resolve”.
Deputy Telecoms Infrastructure Manager, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust
The Solution
Following a detailed survey and consultation period, the Boost Pro technical team designed a solution suitable for the hospital. As communication between staff within the office and Telecoms frame room was vital to operations, Boost Pro installed two systems, with two external antennas.
Internal dome antennas were strategically installed throughout the building, ensuring all key areas were covered with full mobile signal.
This project leverages our licence-exempt Passive DAS Industrial Signal Boosters. This product benefits from:
✓ 3G / 4G / LTE Voice and Data
✓ Multi-Carrier Support with Carrier Switching

The Results
All areas of the department now receive full EE and Vodafone LTE voice and data coverage.
Employees can now easily communicate with one another, without having to go outside of the building.
The team now benefits from health and safety, productivity and operational advantages of being able to use mobile devices on the move.
