Mobile Connectivity Improvement Project

Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust

Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust was established in Worcestershire, England, on 1 July 2011 to manage services previously managed by Worcestershire Primary Care NHS Trust’s Provider Arm, as well as the mental health services that were managed by Worcestershire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust.

The Trust provides community hospitals and community based nursing and therapy services across Worcestershire. On April 1st 2020 the Trust took over the delivery of mental health and learning disability services in Herefordshire in addition to their existing mental health and learning disability services in Worcestershire.

The Trust currently employees around 5,000 staff across the two counties. It was named by the Health Service Journal as one of the top hundred NHS trusts to work for in 2015.

The Challenge

Boost Pro was approached to provide a mobile signal solution for two key buildings – Malvern Community Hospital and Worcester City Inpatient Unit. Both buildings provide a range of inpatient and outpatient services and support people to recover from surgery or illness when they don’t require acute care but neither can they be treated at home. They are a key part of the local healthcare system.

For a number of years, employees have struggled in both hospitals with poor mobile phone signals, hampering their daily duties. This is a common problem in many hospital buildings, due to materials used in construction (concrete, steel and Low-E glass),

The Solution

Following an initial consultation period, Boost Pro engineers surveyed both properties in order to fully understand the issues the employees are facing and to help the design team create a suitable solution.

Due to the size of the buildings, coverage area required, and also the length of cable runs a hybrid DAS was proposed to improve the O2 network within the key areas of both facilities.

The project was broken down into two phases, with the Worcester City Inpatient Unit completed in Dec 2021 and Malvern CH fully installed in Jan 2022.

One of the many advantages of this system for the Trust is if the corporate network was to ever change, there would be no need to decommision and reinstall new equipment. The system can simply be reconfigured at any time using our remote management platform to repeat any network.

This project leverages our license-exempt Hybrid DAS Signal Booster. This product benefits from:

✓ Scalable All-Digital PoE Cat5e Active DAS Hybrid for Middleprise
✓ Up to 100 dB (1000x Stronger Signal)
✓ Single or Multi-Carrier Solution
✓ 3G / 4G / LTE for Voice and Data
✓ Carrier-Approved and Unconditionally Network Safe

The Results

A strong and consistent mobile signal provided for all NHS staff, to ensure daily tasks can be completed and critical calls are not missed.

Full installation was completed in just nine working days across both buildings.

The team now benefits from health and safety, productivity and operational advantages of being able to use mobile devices on the move within the hospital buildings.

Our products are license-exempt and fully comply with Ofcom’s UK Interface requirement 2102 (IR2102) (UK) and ComReg S.I.No.283 of 2018 (Ireland).
