Balfour Beatty - CRM, The University of Edinburgh
Founded in 1909, Balfour Beatty is a leading infrastructure group who have operated for over 110 years internationally. By investing locally and building sustainably, Balfour Beatty has connected communities and created infrastructure that supports everyday lives.
Balfour Beatty is now constructing The Centre for Regenerative Medicine (CRM) for The University of Edinburgh. The completion of the £37M project will aid in the study of stem cells, disease, and tissue repair to advance human health.
The centre, located in Edinburgh’s BioQuarter, was originally opened in 2012 by HRH Princess Royal and since then has developed treatments and diagnostics for brain cancer, liver disease, and Parkinson’s disease.
About Balfour Beatty
The Challenge
With previous solutions not able to provide a good enough connection to support the project’s needs, Clarus was approached to implement a network for 50+ users on the construction site.
The solution had to provide enough speed and bandwith to support:
- Video conferencing
- Building Information Modelling (BIM) software
- CAD software’s large upload and download file sizes
The Solution
Clarus engineers conducted a detailed survey, including spectrum analysis of all available mobile networks to identify the fastest and most stable mobile operator frequencies.
We installed our industrial-grade M2M LTE device which maximises data speeds and connectivity in any location. This works particularly well in remote locations where other devices cannot deliver the required connectivity.
The unit connects to the best possible single network in the area or a combination of two networks offering combined speeds and network resilience.
Our engineers also installed structured cabling into each site office and connected WiFi access points, to ensure connectivity reaches everyone who needs it.
The Results
Maximum possible speeds achieved – 120Mbps down, 50Mbps up
Internet speeds outperform fibre speeds on many installs.
Fully networked site offices, allowing employees to access and share plans, CAD drawings and to collaborate with other colleagues across the company.
Instant communication with Head Office, partners, suppliers, and the community.
IP connectivity for site security – CCTV systems, sensors and health and safety equipment.
