Mobile Connectivity Improvement Project

National Manufacturing Institute Scotland

Operated by The University of Strathclyde, The National Manufacturing Institute Scotland is the future of manufacturing at the heart of the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland.

It is where industry, academia, and the public sector work together on ground-breaking manufacturing research to transform productivity levels, make companies more competitive and boost the skills of our current and future workforce.

The National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) is a group of industry-led manufacturing research and development facilities with a network of Partners across Scotland brought together to boost the manufacturing community.

The Challenge

Poor mobile connectivity is a very common problem within industrial buildings, due to the construction materials used (including steel, concrete, and Low-E glass) as well as often being located in rural areas and therefore far from the closest mobile masts.

This often leads to a number of operational challenges, including communication with other offices, suppliers, and customers. With little to no mobile coverage, health and safety is also a concern.

Due to the highly-technological nature of this new facility, NMIS therefore engaged Boost Pro Systems to develop a solution during the centre’s construction phase.

The Solution

The Boost Pro team worked closely with the main contractor (Imtech) and the end client (University of Strathclyde) during the construction phase of the centre. This allowed our engineers to leverage the existing Cat6 and fibre in the building, in order to minimise disruption and keep costs down.

Boost Pro therefore designed and installed Hybrid DAS to improve all four networks (O2, EE, Vodafone, and Three).

Our Active DAS Hybrid solution provides uniform, high-quality mobile signal throughout the building, and is scalable to the size needed. This delivers a mobile signal that is up to 1000x stronger, utilizing CAT 5e/6 cabling for RF and Power over Ethernet, with no signal attenuation, right to the perimeter of the building.

With no operator licence required, installation was completed in just five days – this smart cellular solution delivers the industry’s highest gain, at the lowest cost per square metre.

Our solution benefits from:

 All networks improved
✓ Multi Network 3G 4G 5G* Voice and Data
 Up to 1000x stronger signal
✓ Network Safe and Network operator approved
✓ Indoor / Outdoor NEMA 4 Rated
✓ Scalable, all-digital PoE Solution
✓ Setup, Maintenance, and Remote Management

*Hardware is 5G ready for Voice and Data and service will be activated once Ofcom approves 5G frequencies.

The Results

All key areas now receive full voice and data coverage across all four networks.

Employees can now easily communicate with all stakeholders, including other offices, suppliers, partners and customers.

The team now benefits from health and safety, productivity and operational advantages of being able to use mobile devices on the move within the centre.

Our products are license-exempt and fully comply with Ofcom’s UK Interface requirement 2102 (IR2102) (UK) and ComReg S.I.No.283 of 2018 (Ireland).
