That’s why The Clarus Networks Group has focused on certifying Starlink’s advanced satellite technology for rail-specific use. Through our work, we’ve ensured that Starlink terminals meet stringent rail standards, including: 

  • EN50155: Governs the electronic equipment used on rolling stock, ensuring equipment operates reliably under harsh environmental conditions like temperature fluctuations and vibrations. 
  • EN50121: Relates to electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) for railways, minimising interference between different electronic systems. 
  • EN45545: Sets fire safety requirements, ensuring the equipment meets high standards for protection in the event of a fire onboard trains. 

By securing these certifications, we’ve ensured that Starlink’s satellite solutions are fully compliant with the rail industry’s rigorous safety and performance standards, ensuring reliable integration with existing infrastructure. 

Improving Rail Operations: How Satellite Connectivity Transforms Efficiency 

One of the most significant benefits of introducing satellite-powered solutions to the rail industry is the operational transformation it enables. This means that systems responsible for monitoring track conditions, level crossings, and critical infrastructure points can transmit data in real-time, enabling faster response times for maintenance teams and improved safety measures across the network. The system also enables better communication at remote signal boxes, further improving operational safety. 

Measurement Trains and Trackside Infrastructure: Transforming Safety and Diagnostics 

In addition to enhancing connectivity on passenger trains, The Clarus Networks Group is advancing its work with measurement trains and trackside infrastructure. These specialised trains are equipped with Starlink-powered systems that enable real-time data transmission from the trackside environment, providing detailed diagnostics on track conditions, rail alignment, and structural integrity. 

By leveraging Starlink’s satellite network, measurement trains are able to continuously monitor critical infrastructure and provide actionable data in real time, even in remote areas with no traditional network coverage. This improves safety by enabling early detection of potential issues such as track deformation, bridge weaknesses, or landslip risks, allowing maintenance teams to act proactively.

Traditional mobile network solutions have struggled to meet these expectations in remote or rural regions, often resulting in inconsistent service or connectivity blackouts. 

Starlink’s LEO satellite constellation addresses these challenges head-on by providing continuous, high-speed internet access, regardless of a train’s location. This means that passengers travelling through the most remote parts of the UK can enjoy uninterrupted Wi-Fi for streaming, video conferencing, and cloud-based services.
