Revolutionising Rail Connectivity with Satellite-Powered Solutions: How The Clarus Networks Group is Leading the Charge

Clarus and Starlink leading Starlink and LEO satellite internet for rail

Reliable connectivity is essential for the future of rail transport. Whether it’s ensuring passengers enjoy seamless internet access or enabling real-time data exchange for train monitoring and safety systems, rail networks must embrace cutting-edge technology to meet growing demands. However, in remote and rural areas, traditional infrastructure often falls short of delivering the necessary levels of connectivity.

To address these challenges, The Clarus Networks Group has spearheaded the adoption of Starlink’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology within the rail industry. In partnership with ScotRail, we’ve equipped an initial fleet of six trains with Starlink terminals to conduct live trials, focusing on the notoriously challenging Far North Line in Scotland. This deployment is helping to revolutionise onboard communications and streamline operational efficiency in areas where rail networks have historically faced communication blackouts.

Bringing Satellite Technology to the Rail Industry: Meeting Rail’s Unique Needs

Rail connectivity presents distinct challenges that require specialised solutions. The geographic and operational diversity of rail networks means that any communication system must function reliably in both urban centres and remote, rugged regions. Connectivity is crucial not only for passengers, who expect uninterrupted internet access, but also for operational systems, including real-time monitoring, security, and maintenance diagnostics.

That’s why The Clarus Networks Group has focused on certifying Starlink’s advanced satellite technology for rail-specific use. Through our work, we’ve ensured that Starlink terminals meet stringent rail standards, including:

  • EN50155: Governs the electronic equipment used on rolling stock, ensuring equipment operates reliably under harsh environmental conditions like temperature fluctuations and vibrations.
  • EN50121: Relates to electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) for railways, minimising interference between different electronic systems.
  • EN45545: Sets fire safety requirements, ensuring the equipment meets high standards for protection in the event of a fire onboard trains.

By securing these certifications, we’ve ensured that Starlink’s satellite solutions are fully compliant with the rail industry’s rigorous safety and performance standards, ensuring reliable integration with existing infrastructure.

Improving Rail Operations: How Satellite Connectivity Transforms Efficiency

One of the most significant benefits of introducing satellite-powered solutions to the rail industry is the operational transformation it enables. Rail operators are increasingly dependent on real-time data to ensure safe and efficient service. From condition monitoring to predictive maintenance, the flow of information is crucial to maintaining performance and safety standards.

Starlink’s satellite network, supported by over 6,000 satellites orbiting at around 550 km, delivers low-latency (~40 ms) and high-speed internet (up to 220 Mbps). This level of connectivity enables rail operators to seamlessly monitor and respond to real-time data, ensuring that all onboard systems—such as CCTV, Passenger Information Systems (PIS), and vehicle condition monitoring—function optimally, even in areas where traditional mobile networks struggle.

In addition to improving train-to-ground communications, Starlink’s low-latency data transmission enhances train-to-train and trackside communication. This means that systems responsible for monitoring track conditions, level crossings, and critical infrastructure points can transmit data in real-time, enabling faster response times for maintenance teams and improved safety measures across the network. The system also enables better communication at remote signal boxes, further improving operational safety.

Measurement Trains and Trackside Infrastructure: Transforming Safety and Diagnostics

In addition to enhancing connectivity on passenger trains, The Clarus Networks Group is advancing its work with measurement trains and trackside infrastructure. These specialised trains are equipped with Starlink-powered systems that enable real-time data transmission from the trackside environment, providing detailed diagnostics on track conditions, rail alignment, and structural integrity.

By leveraging Starlink’s satellite network, measurement trains are able to continuously monitor critical infrastructure and provide actionable data in real time, even in remote areas with no traditional network coverage. This improves safety by enabling early detection of potential issues such as track deformation, bridge weaknesses, or landslip risks, allowing maintenance teams to act proactively.

Our trackside infrastructure solutions also enhance connectivity for remote operations. Whether it’s supporting CCTV at level crossings, monitoring infrastructure, or ensuring connectivity for isolated signal boxes, our satellite-powered solutions deliver robust and reliable communications across the network.

Taking Rail Safety to the Next Level

Rail safety is paramount, and our satellite-powered solutions provide a new layer of protection for rail operators. Starlink’s satellite technology enables robust real-time CCTV surveillance, ensuring that rail operators can monitor both onboard and trackside conditions continuously. This is particularly valuable for dynamic threat detection and incident response, allowing immediate action in case of emergencies.

Additionally, real-time vehicle condition monitoring (RCM), made possible by reliable satellite connectivity, allows operators to monitor the health of trains in motion, identifying potential issues before they escalate into major problems. This not only enhances safety but also reduces downtime and maintenance costs by enabling predictive maintenance.

Satellite connectivity also improves trackside monitoring, where traditional communication systems often fail, particularly in remote areas. With satellites, operators can monitor the condition of tracks, bridges, and infrastructure in real-time, ensuring that any potential risks—such as landslides or flooding—are addressed swiftly.

Enhancing the Passenger Experience: Reliable Wi-Fi Across All Routes

While operational improvements are crucial, a key focus for rail operators today is delivering an exceptional passenger experience. Reliable onboard Wi-Fi is no longer optional; it’s a necessity, especially as more passengers expect to stay connected throughout their journey for work, entertainment, or communication. Traditional mobile network solutions have struggled to meet these expectations in remote or rural regions, often resulting in inconsistent service or connectivity blackouts.

Starlink’s LEO satellite constellation addresses these challenges head-on by providing continuous, high-speed internet access, regardless of a train’s location. This means that passengers travelling through the most remote parts of the UK can enjoy uninterrupted Wi-Fi for streaming, video conferencing, and cloud-based services. By deploying Starlink technology on their fleet, rail operators can significantly enhance customer satisfaction and meet the growing demand for reliable onboard internet services.

A Partnership for Progress: ScotRail and The Clarus Networks Group

The collaboration between The Clarus Networks Group and ScotRail represents a significant milestone in rail communications. Our deployment of Starlink terminals on ScotRail’s Class 158 trains is helping to address long-standing connectivity issues, particularly on Scotland’s Far North Line. This collaboration is not just about solving immediate challenges but also about building the foundation for the future of smart rail networks.

As we continue to test and refine these systems through live trials, we’re gathering valuable data on how satellite-powered solutions can improve connectivity and operational efficiency for rail networks across the UK and beyond. Our goal is to expand these capabilities, helping other rail operators modernise their systems and bridge the connectivity gap in remote areas.

Why Satellite Connectivity is the Future of Rail

With traditional mobile networks like GSM-R and mmWave struggling to provide consistent coverage in remote areas, Starlink offers a reliable alternative that’s scalable, robust, and future-proof. As the rail industry looks to embrace digital transformation, satellite-powered solutions will play a crucial role in enabling smart, connected rail networks
